For the past year we have been working with the Amulet architectural studio on an orientation system for the Lauder School, which is run by the Jewish community. Classes remain in their tribal room for the duration of the study, but their names need to be rotated each year. We opted for a variable system that allows components to change as needed. The choice of colour scheme responded to the system the school already had in place – yellow doors are freely accessible to students and grey doors should be knocked on. To break the austerity that an orientation system can cause, we designed a space where students and teachers can do whatever they want – a magnetic board serves as a communication tool where anything can be snapped or written in chalk. At the end of the work, we attended a pedagogical council to present the whole project to the users of the orientation system. After the first week, a third of the boards were taped or drawn on. The drawing of the pictograms indicating specific rooms is based on the Hebrew script.
